CommLead Consulting Bridges the Gap Between Classroom and Career

Comm Lead December first friday with Alumni Fellows

At UW Communication, we don’t just teach communication; we prepare students to be socially responsible citizens who can navigate a complex, globalized world. This mission is tangibly realized in the Communication Leadership (CommLead) professional master’s program, established in 2000.

We often hear about the importance of “applied learning,” but what does that look like in practice? One example is CommLead Consulting which has become a cornerstone of the program’s career development infrastructure since it launched in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Operating as a student-run agency, it pairs graduate students with mission-driven organizations, small businesses, and UW departments that need professional communication support. To date, the Consultancy has partnered with over 400 organizations to execute more than 430 diverse projects, providing students with hands-on experience in a range of areas, including UX/UI design, brand strategy, content writing, and multimedia storytelling.

For the Department, the Consultancy is more than just a job board; it is a strategic extension of our pedagogical goals. It enables students to evaluate ethical and equitable communication practices against the challenges of real-world constraints. Whether crafting a communication plan for a nonprofit or designing a digital strategy for a startup, students are turning theory into professional application before they even graduate.

A student’s perspective

Kaan Kaplanoğlu serves as the Communication and Career Coordinator for CommLead Consulting. Sitting at the unique intersection of student peer and professional guide, Kaplanoğlu views the Consultancy as a vital “safety net” for professional experimentation.

“In class, you learn the frameworks. You learn how to think strategically, analyze audiences, and approach storytelling responsibly. But the Consultancy is where you feel what that actually means,” Kaan explains. “When working with a real client, there are deadlines, expectations, and uncertainty. You have to stand behind your recommendations. It mirrors how communication actually functions today, so the transition into the job market feels less abrupt and more intentional.”

This intentional transition often leads to a profound shift in self-assurance. According to Kaan, the biggest transformation he witnesses is how students articulate their value.

“At the beginning, many are unsure how to position their skills,” he notes. “After completing a Consultancy project, that changes. They can say, ‘I built a crisis communication plan,’ or ‘I designed a campaign strategy.’ That specificity gives them confidence. It’s about seeing proof that you can contribute real value. That shift from student to professional starts to feel real.”

The Future is Collaborative

Kaan’s dual role gives him a layered perspective on the CommLead community, and highlights exactly why this internal agency model works. “Instead of separating theory from practice, we integrate them,” he says. “Students are not waiting until after graduation to contribute meaningfully. They are already doing professional-level work within a supported environment.”

As we look toward the rest of 2026 and beyond, CommLead Consulting stands as a testament to UW Communication’s commitment to public scholarship. For students looking to get involved, the Consultancy offers both volunteer and paid opportunities on a rolling basis. It is an invitation to step out of the classroom and into the community, not just to learn leadership, but to practice it.

For our alumni and community partners seeking fresh perspectives for their next project, the door is open to collaborate. Visit the CommLead Consulting client page to set up a consultation and discover how our students can help bring your organization’s vision to life!
