Janine Slaker is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Communication for the Integrated Social Sciences program at the University of Washington. Her Ph.D. is in Media and Information from Michigan State University. She also holds a B.F.A. in New Genres from the Maryland Institute, College of Art (MICA). Janine uses ethnographic approaches to study the social dimensions of technology. Her research areas include queer theory, critical race theory, epistemology of the social sciences, categorization and sorting, data aesthetics, and digital racial formation.
Janine’s work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, and has appeared in Feminist Media Studies, the Symposium on Usable Privacy and Security, the International Journal of Communication and Computers in Human Behavior. She is also a junior editor for the Journal of Social Computing (IEEE). Before joining the academic community, Janine worked as an artist in New York City and the Baltimore/D.C. region.
